I have just recently started realizing the importance of acknowledging our past.

And I am not talking about our personal past (that should be processed in therapy by every single person). I am talking about our faraway past — our ancestors.

Those who sacrificed everything for us to be on this beautiful earth. Those who accumulated wisdom throughout thousands of years and passed it from generation to generation for us to make better decisions now, in our modern world. Those whose choices somewhat define our nature nowadays.

So how do we connect with our ancestors? And why?

There are many ways, and each can bring its own unique insights and rewards.

Whether through research, spirituality, creativity, or a combination of these approaches, exploring our roots can deepen our appreciation for the past and help us find meaning and purpose in the present.

It can also help us tap into ancestral wisdom (sometimes without even realizing it) and find guidance within.

Let’s jump right into it!

🌖 Ways to connect with ancestors

So how to connect with your ancestors spiritually?

There are various ways to connect with our ancestors, and doing so can be a meaningful and enlightening experience.

One way is to research your family history and heritage. This can involve looking up old records and documents, talking to older family members, and even visiting ancestral homes and towns. By learning about our ancestors’ lives, we can gain a greater appreciation for their struggles, triumphs, and contributions.

Additionally, exploring our roots through art and creativity can be a powerful way to connect with our ancestors. This can involve creating art that reflects our cultural heritage, learning traditional crafts and skills, or even just listening to music and stories that have been passed down through generations. By engaging with the art and culture of our ancestors, we can gain a deeper understanding of their worldviews, values, and experiences.

Another way to connect with our ancestors is through spiritual practices and rituals. Many cultures have traditions that involve honoring and communing with the spirits of their ancestors. This can include lighting candles, offering food, and saying prayers or incantations. By participating in these rituals, we can create a sense of connection and continuity with our ancestors, and feel their presence and guidance in our lives.

One of the easiest and widely available ways to connect with your ancestors is meditation. I created a guided meditation to walk you through this experience.

🧘🏾‍♂️ Meditation to connect with ancestors (meditation script)

This practice is really about grounding, reconnecting with your body which is one of the major connecting links between us and our ancestors, and tapping into our inner spiritual wisdom.

This meditation is best practiced with headphones on or in a quiet place where you can settle into this experience without distraction and maintain a deep focus throughout the whole practice.

For this meditation, it’s best if you can sit on the floor or even better on the ground outside maybe in the backyard or a park. But if you’re inside dim the lights, maybe light up a candle if you like those.

Find a comfortable seated position. Sit tall, and make sure you can keep your back straight while relaxing all the muscles in your body at the same time. Use a pillow or a blanket if you need to. Then place your hands where it feels natural.

When you are ready, close your eyes.

Take a few seconds to immerse yourself in the present moment.

Relax your face, your lips, your jaw. Relax your shoulders, your hands, and fingers. Relax your belly and feel it softly move with your breath.

Feel the breeze and the clothes you’re wearing lightly touching your skin. Hear the music and let your consciousness flow with it. Notice your breath — without changing or controlling it.

Now, let’s take three deep breaths.

Take a deep breath in through your nose — let the fresh cool air fill up your lungs all the way to the top, then hold for a moment… and slowly release through your mouth.

Put a hand on your belly to feel the way your body flows naturally in the process of breathing. Take another deep breath in, feeling your belly expand… And exhale letting all the air out.

Last deep breath in… And out.

Take a few moments to notice any changes in your body.

The truth is, to connect with our ancestors, we need to turn within. All the ancestral memory and energy are stored in our bodies. Our bodies are keys to the deepest wisdom.

Keeping your eyes closed, imagine looking around. You can only see the darkness. But what is behind the darkness of your closed eyes?..

Imagine starting to fly through this darkness. You are floating through it, it’s all around you and there is nothing else. You are picking up the speed… Now you are piercing through the darkness… and suddenly you see a little spot of light in the distance. It’s getting bigger and bigger… It’s so close now that you start recognizing the sky, the greenery, the mountains…

Suddenly you are breaking into this beautiful landscape and the darkness disappears. You are now flying over a beautiful pine forest… You can see a raging river full of life passing through the forest and crossing over a green valley full of flowers. A chain of magnificent snow-capped mountains is seen in the distance. You can see the sun sinking behind them, turning the sky orange, pink and purple. You are approaching the mountains and now are flying over them, watching the clouds touch the snow-covered peaks.

You are flying through this beautiful world of yours — it is the world that is hidden deep inside your mind. It is the world that belongs to you and you only. It is the world that you can travel to from anywhere and at any time when you want to connect with your ancestors.

The sun is now down and you see a large campfire far away in the dusk. You can see people moving around the fire. Some of them are dancing, some of them are singing, some of them are meditating looking at the flames. You cannot see their faces and what they are wearing but you know they are your family. You feel so much warmth, love, and acceptance coming from them.

You land softly next to the fire. You watch the flame, the sparks flying around in the night sky… You smell the smokey air… You see your ancestors forming a circle around the campfire, putting their arms around each other. You join them in the circle. They are swaying back and forth to the rhythm of the music, they are smiling softly, and humming the melody…

This reunion makes you feel safe and secure… You feel like you have all the knowledge needed to get the best out of any situation. You know that you can come here any time and get all the support and all the answers. Your ancestors are always here protecting you and making sure you have everything you need. If you ever feel lovely they are here by your side.

Spend a few more moments with them.

Start slowly rising above the ground. You are flying up higher and higher, your ancestors and their campfire is becoming smaller and smaller… And now you are flying back over the mountains, the valley, the river… You are rising higher and higher above the forest into the night sky… until you can only see the darkness around you.

When you are ready open your eyes.

🙏🏼 How to get help from ancestors?

Can your ancestors help you? How to speak to your ancestors? These are all reasonable questions.

You can totally ask your ancestors for help.

One of the most powerful ways is (again) meditation. It’s also mostly about turning your focus within and looking for answers within your body. Our bodies are channels our ancestors speak with us through.

Another way would be a prayer. Maybe you have a specific prayer you like using, otherwise, you can just talk to them in your mind as if they were sitting next to you, and ask for help.

If you know the name of the ancestor you’d like to address or you have a photo, the connection will be even stronger. Have the photo in front of you while meditating, or just mention their name in the prayer.
