Want to know how to get out of a slump in life? These are tried and true tips on how to use a reset routine to get out of a slump and get motivated.

You can call it whatever you want but overall it’s all the same: we feel unmotivated, sad, and not excited about things that usually excite us. We operate on autopilot.

Usually, a reset routine is what they call a weekly/monthly routine that helps to put your life together in one day. We are going to use that to get our energy back.

In this post, I’m sharing how to get out of a slump at work and in everyday life. You’ll learn the reset routine that I personally tried, and it worked absolutely amazing, and also a little secret technique that I find extremely helpful.

☔️ What Is a Slump?

In the financial world, a slump refers to a period of poor performance or inactivity in an economy, market, or industry. Which absolutely makes sense if you apply it to a human being.

And we sometimes don’t realize that…

⚖️ It’s All About Balance

I heard that the reason for feeling overwhelmed and eventually absolutely indifferent about anything might be working too much.

But in my opinion, it’s all about only working and not enjoying your life at all. Not having a moment to relax. Not finding time for self-care, hobbies, family, and friends.

If all you do is killing it at work — there is no balance. You drain your “energy storage” because you only take and don’t put anything there.

It’s not bad to work a lot. We all do.

And it actually feels great — being busy and getting things done.

What we shouldn’t do is make our life all about work.

💊 Best Reset Routine — Basics

We should be dedicating at least a couple of hours per day to ourselves.

So definitely get back on track with your daily routine, or create one if you still haven’t.

A great reset routine would consist of these things:

  1. Journaling. You can journal about everything. Especially when you are feeling uneasy. For example, brain dump or write down all the initial reasons why you chose your career.
  2. Call or see your best friends or family. Someone who always supports.
  3. Buy yourself something that would make you feel confident at the moment. I bought little silver hoops recently — two for each ear — and I never took them off since then.
  4. Go for a long walk with a podcast (tryCreative Pep Talk) or an audiobook in your headphones.
  5. Romanticize your daily moments. Play some nice jazz while cleaning, burn some palo santo before going to bed, light up candles while reading or doing evening skin care.
  6. Get active. It’s a cliche one but it works. It boosts your mood. My go-to — ashtanga yoga.
  7. Take some time alone. Try locking up in your apartment for three days and don’t talk to anyone. Sometimes feels rrreally good.

⚓️ Do This When You Feel Like Nothing Is Exciting

This little technique has been helping me my whole life but I just recently realized that. Funny how sometimes things are affecting our lives drastically, and we are not even aware of it.

I was going through this slump phase just recently, and it was pretty tough. At some point I caught myself thinking:

“I don’t know why I am doing all this. What for?”

And then I realized two things:

  1. I lost my purpose. My goals are too abstract or they don’t make me excited.
  2. I desperately need some change. Every day feels like a groundhog day. Something in my environment has to change as soon as possible.

Using this knowledge I came up with an exercise that I am planning to use deliberately from now on any time I feel stuck.

Here’s what you can do:

▪️ Step 1: Write Down Five Things You Would Like To Change

Think of every aspect of your life. What you would like to change in your life? What are you lacking? What do you have in excess that you would cut down?

Use this list as a reference:

  1. Career
  2. Relationships
  3. Finances
  4. Recreation
  5. Personal growth
  6. Health
  7. Spirituality

▪️ Step 2: Select Three Things That You Would Do First

Select three things out of those five that you would work on first. It’s all about priority.

▪️ Step 3: Choose One — The Most Profound And Urgent One

Is there one thing that you just need to get rid of or change ASAP? You might feel like you just can’t stand it anymore?

This might be the anchor that is dragging you down.

That’s the one to start working on right now.

If you don’t understand what is it that you are craving change in, here is a little secret:

Listen to what your body is telling you.

Probably the biggest burden at the moment of writing this post was the apartment I lived in. I loved it because it has a lot of memories but it didn’t satisfy my needs anymore. Before I even realized it, I kept getting into clumsy accidents when doing something at home. No joke! I constantly stub my feet, bump into things, cut my fingers, scratch my arms, and so on. I always have at least three bruises at once.

And then I figured that I didn’t want to be there anymore so bad, that my body was literally fighting with that place!

▪️ Step 4: Set a Real Goal

Its’ potential achievement has to make you feel relieved.

And make sure to make your goal specific.

For example, if you are extremely tired of the apartment you live in — set a goal to move out. Once I decided that I am moving out by this specific time — I felt SO much better.

It looks like there is no connection between moving to a different place and feeling motivated at work but that’s exactly what brought my professional drive back!

I felt like I know where I am going and why, and how exciting this new chapter of my life will be. New adventure!

▪️ Step 5: Make a Detailed Plan

Then create a meticulous step-by-step plan. It’s going to be your road map. Having a thorough plan on how to get to your goal is one of the most game-changing hacks on how to get out of a slump.

Don’t overthink that too much though quite yet. You can always come back and move things around. Right now this is just to give you an idea of where you are going.

▪️ Step 6: Act

To keep yourself accountable, have an agreement — with someone (who is going there with you or can help/support) or with yourself.

You can also “oblige” yourself by doing something you cannot cancel — like buying plane tickets. It works 🙂

So if you are anything like me, you always need these three things to get going:

  1. Purpose
  2. Change
  3. Plan

This step-by-step system works because:

  • You’ve got your purpose, and you are on the way to your change
  • You have more confidence in the next day since you know what you are doing and why
  • You have no FOMO because you know what you want
  • New doors are opening for you because most likely you are either accepting all the opportunities (for example to make/save more money) or learning new things (to be able to achieve your goal)

💗 Little Reminder

Remember that once, a long time ago, you chose your craft for a reason. You might feel exhausted right now but it’s still your thing, and I promise you are not alone. And you’ll be back.

And by the way, it’s actually a nice feeling that you have to force yourself to draw, to style, to write, to create.

You sometimes have to force yourself to do what you are passionate about. And that’s the beauty. That’s the romance of creativity.

I prefer forcing myself to do that rather than anything else.
