🕊️ How to get out of a creative block: 10-minute guided meditation

Creative block: how to overcome it???

If you don’t want to read anything and just want to jump right into the meditation, I totally understand (I’d feel the same way). 🙂

I put together this meditation based on the journal entries that I did when I was struggling with a creative block.

Below you will see the script in case you want to write down the affirmations.

Sit in a comfortable position — cross-legged on a cushion or a pillow would be perfect, make sure nothing will interrupt you for the next 10 minutes.

Keep your hands where it feels more natural to you — on your knees or your lap. When you are ready, close your eyes. Keep your back straight and your muscles relaxed. As you drop into this safe space, allow your belly to be soft.

Let’s take three deep belly breaths together. Then bring your breath back to normal.

Feel how cool the air is coming in, and how warm it is coming out. Feel the recurring movement of your chest and stomach. Note what it feels like in your nose and throat.

Take a couple of still, silent moments to focus on your breath. Keep observing your breath. You can repeat after me the following affirmations in your mind or simply meditate on them. I’ll be sure to give you enough time.

The time that I spend working on my art is exceptionally valuable.

No matter how good or bad the result ends up being, I am happy with it.

Whatever it is that I am creating is rightfully called My Art.

Making art is my meditation.

Making art is helping my creativity unleash and flow.

Making art is honing my craft and getting experience.

All that is more meaningful than a finished product because it becomes a part of me and will stay with me forever.

It’s time for me to start overcoming my creative fears because I want to create freely.

I know that inaction goes against the flow of the universe, which is moving and changing all the time. I also know that the more I do something, the more habitual it becomes. As momentum builds, it gets easier and takes less effort to get up and go. That’s why I choose action.

The more I create, the more the neurons in my body involved in this process are wired together. When it happens, my body and mind will be on standby to help me honor my fears yet choose my art.

I commit and re-commit to my art and to working on it every day.

Dear universe, dear angles, dear God, I am excited to see what you prepared for me. I love your surprises because you always take care of me.

Everything is always working out for me.

I am where I am supposed to be right now.

I am here for a reason.

When I open my eyes, I will get back to my favorite craft with loving kindness.

Start bringing your awareness back to your body. Gently move your toes and fingers. Take a deep breath… and open your eyes.

Lift your arms up and give yourself a nice stretch. I hope you’re feeling better and now… it’s time to create.

💭 What causes “creative block”?

Unfortunately, there are too many things that can cause a creative block… Here are some of them:

  • Fear of imperfection or failure
  • Attachment to the result
  • Strong inner critics (self-criticism and self-judgement)
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Old unprocessed trauma
  • Stress, or exhaustion
  • Dissatisfaction with life

All these are totally fixable! You just need to identify your personal obstacle and then plan out the steps to get rid of it. Be aware that it will take time.

📌 Types of creative blocks

I would agree with the author of this article about the types of creative blocks. Here they are:

  • The mental block (your thinking patterns and limiting beliefs)
  • The emotional barrier (creativity is all about the uncomfortable and the unknown)
  • Work habits (living a lifestyle incompatible with your personality)
  • Personal problems (going through personal struggles)
  • Poverty (shortage of money, knowledge, or time)
  • Overwhelm (too much is going on)
  • Communication breakdown (your team- or audience-related issue)

It’s also pretty common to get creative block anxiety. When you are not able to put yourself together to get started, you start stressing out even more!

“Am I ever gonna get inspired again? Am I just going to waste the whole day like this? What about my deadlines?”

You start panicking and it makes it even worse.

There’s so much to be discussed when it comes to creative blocks but I really hope my meditation helped you to get unstuck and re-connect with your art.

Let me know what affirmation seems the most powerful to you!
