So you are a complete newcomer in this meditation world but you heard it helps with stress and overall well-being and stimulates creativity? Or you’ve been a meditation practitioner for a while and you want to learn more about the spiritual side of it? Whatever it is, I invite you on this spiritual journey where we’ll learn how to meditate spiritually.

I bet you’re aware of all the possible ways meditation benefits your life — it improves your physical, emotional, and mental health dramatically.

Meditation is extremely nurturing on all levels. It resets your mind, renews your energy… It also even sometimes provides you with answers delivered through apparitions or voices. All you have to do is to let go of the past and future and be open to the wisdom that exists within you.

Now, you might be wondering: “How do I open up spiritually? How do I invite this eternal wisdom into my life?”

Well, that is being done exactly through meditative practices. And yes, in the beginning, you’ll get annoyed or angry or endlessly bored, or you might be falling asleep. You might not be able to control your thoughts or stop them from flooding your head…

And that’s EVERYONE at the beginning. Once you do it a couple of times and hit the “threshold”, your perspective will change completely.

There is a certain kind of meditation that I especially love for the way it makes me feel, and for all the insights and lessons I get. And it’s spiritual meditation that we’re going to talk about in this post.

We’ll go over the types and benefits of spiritual meditation, how to meditate spiritually as a beginner, how to achieve deep spiritual meditation, and much more!

Get ready and let’s jump in!

This post is all about how to meditate spiritually.

🧘🏻‍♀️ What is spiritual meditation?

In many religions and spiritual traditions, it’s believed to be an essential way to connect with the divine. I’ve heard a lot of definitions of spiritual meditation, here’s my own:

Spiritual meditation is a mindful practice that helps raise your vibrational frequency through connecting with yourself, higher power and sources like Universe, God, etc.

Its main difference from regular meditation is that it has a spiritual intention behind it.

🌿 Types of spiritual meditation

There are dozens of kinds of spiritual meditations but I am going to list the ones that I’ve tried at least once.

Here they are:

Vipassana meditation — focuses on mindfulness through observing things — your body, thoughts, emotions, etc. — as they are, without judging.

Zen meditation — focuses on mindfulness through general awareness and simple existence; the most important practice in Zen Buddhism.

Mantra meditation — focuses on mindfulness through the repetition of phrases (mantras).

Chakra meditation — focuses on activating, opening, and balancing each of the seven chakras in the body through mantras and visualization.

Kundalini meditation — focuses on cleansing the energy of your body through your root chakra and includes deep breathing, mudras (hand movements), mantras, and body positions; it’s also a part of Kundalini yoga.

Sound bath meditation — immersing into a meditative state through “bathing” in sound waves with a certain frequency (usually coming from different musical instruments).

✨ What is the spiritual purpose of meditation?

The spiritual purpose of meditation is to let go of the past and future and focus on the present moment.

That is done to strengthen your conscious mind which will help you know yourself better, get stronger control over your mind and body, and open the door to inner wisdom.

🌞 What is spiritual awakening?

Here’s a quote from my favorite yogis, Bre and Flo:

People think it’s a mysterious thing called awakening… But it’s actually not this mysterious. It is simply a realization that you are not your thoughts, separating your true being from the thoughts and from the voice in your head. It’s the identification with your true self and with what currently is going on, and not with what’s going on in your mind.

It’s that simple!

Yes, it will take you quite some time to get there. For some, it might be a lifetime journey.

By the way, check out Bre and Flo’s meditation program that I’ve been doing for a week now and I absolutely love it (100% free too!) — Breathe and Flow Meditation Classes

Their channel is my favorite for yoga and meditation classes, and yogic philosophy and lifestyle.

👍🏽 Spiritual benefits of meditation

Now, the list of spiritual benefits of meditation is HUGE. I would probably need a whole separate post to list them all.

  • Deeper knowledge of yourself
  • Easier surrendering to the natural flow of things
  • Letting go of what cannot be controlled
  • A powerful feeling of gratitude and the Universe’s (God’s, Source’s, etc.) generosity
  • Fast and effortless manifestation of all your dreams
  • A deep feeling of freedom and worthiness
  • Increased creativity and resourcefulness (yes-yes, I love me some good creativity boost, I know you do too)
  • Deeper, more meaningful connections with other people
  • A strong sense of belonging and connection to all
  • A neutral attitude without going into extreme emotions
  • A clearer vision of the purpose of your life
  • Giving up judgment
  • Resilience and ability to stay calm and sober-minded during uncertain times

🌱 How to meditate spiritually: Spiritual meditation for beginners

Now it’s time to meditate.

1. Find a quiet place. It’s best to find a place where you won’t be interrupted or disturbed. For example for me, it’s my bedroom (more tips on meditating at home later in this post), or preferably somewhere in nature — woods, lawn, by the river, even a park. Just make sure it’s a secluded space with no people around.

2. Find a comfortable position. You have to be comfortable to be able to sit in one position for a longer period of time, but not too relaxed where you’d fall asleep. So I don’t recommend laying down for spiritual meditation, even if it’s one of the acceptable meditation positions. You can sit on a cushion on the floor with your legs crossed, on a chair with your feet stable on the floor, or kneel on a yoga mat (might be hard to sustain for a long time). Keep your back straight, chin a little down so that your spine is straight, and hands on your knees or in your lap.

If your back or legs are uncomfortable, you can lean against the wall or the back of your chair — just make sure you are not collapsing. Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes that are reasonable for the temperature you’re in. Make all the adjustments you need before starting your meditation.

3. Get present in the moment. Close your eyes. Take three slow deep breaths — in through your nose, out through your mouth. Then seal the lips and stop controlling your breathing. From now on, you’ll only be observing it exactly the way it is. Take some time to arrive in this position and slow down your mind a little bit.

There are days when my mind is especially chatty. Like if someone could draw it, it would literally look like me dragging my mind into the stillness and my mind kicking and yelling and fist fighting me. In this situation, I usually tell myself that I will only focus on meditation for the next several minutes and that there is nothing else for me to think about and do during this time.

4. Set an intention (optional step). If you are trying to focus on a certain issue or goal, you can set an intention for your practice. In your head, ask a question you’d like to get an answer to. You can also repeat in your head some affirmations that you would want to imprint in your mind.

If you’re in a confusing life situation, a good question to ask yourself would sound like How would the highest version of me navigate this situation?

5. Immerse into your experience. Acknowledge your thoughts. They will flood your mind… Don’t worry, just softly bring your attention back to whatever you’ve been focusing on. (I like focusing on my breath over others.) Keep breathing naturally. You might want to choose one of the tricks below if you don’t know what to start with.

I’d also recommend trying guided meditations on Youtube so you get an overall idea. Here is one example: 10 Minute Spiritual Awakening Guided Meditation for Beginners

6. Slowly get back to this reality to finish your meditation. Move your fingers and toes. Open your eyes. Move slowly.

7. Show yourself some gratitude for showing up and write down your observations in your journal.

SOME OF THE BEST TIPS AND TRICKS I LEARNED SO FAR:

  • Don’t force it and don’t beat yourself up. Surrendering plays a big role in this experience. If your mind starts wandering, be kind to yourself and praise yourself for noticing it. Then just bring your attention back to your breath.
  • Do it daily. Start with three minutes and keep doing it every day until the habit is stuck with you at the same level, as brushing your teeth every morning. I highly recommend starting with very short meditations so that you make sure the habit is firmly secured in your daily routine. Then increase the time. That is the only way to learn how to meditate spiritually regularly. You can find some motivation here — Revealed: Self Discipline is Self Love
  • Don’t look at others’ experiences. Each experience is unique and you might place unrealistic expectations by thinking you should do, look, or get results like someone else.
  • Give your mind a job. I did tons of meditations so far, and I’ve come up with a technique that helps my mind stop wandering. So here’s what you have to do to keep your mind still and focused on your breath: Notice how your breath is entering your body through your 1) nose — 2) throat — 3) chest and lungs — 4) belly, one by one at first. (Literally, notice the sensation of cool air in each of those spots.) Once you catch each feeling separately, try to notice all of them at the same time. It’s pretty challenging, and your mind will love staying busy with that. And you’ll love your mind away from dipping into noisy thoughts.
  • Focus on the simplest practices first. Set an intention and immerse yourself in it for five minutes.
  • Try body scan meditation when you can’t focus. This practice can help you bring awareness into your body and tap into deeper focus for your spiritual meditation. Here’s a great guided body scan meditation: Body Scan Meditation (15 minutes – audio)
  • Try counting when you can’t focus. In your mind, count each of your breaths in and out. You will count “one” for breath in, and “one” for breath out. “Two” for breath in, “two” for breath out. And so forth. Once you reach ten, start over.
  • Add smudging into your routine. Burn some palo santo or sage before the practice for better concentration and energy cleansing.

So that’s how to meditate spiritually — for beginners and experienced practitioners.

🙇🏼‍♂️ How to meditate spiritually: Deep spiritual meditation

If you practice meditation long enough, at some point you might start falling into deeper states of awareness and mindfulness. It feels different to everyone when it happens — might be anything from feeling like you’re just floating in the air as if you had no physical body, to literally getting insights to your daily problems coming from the depth of your being.

Overall, deep spiritual meditation is more intense than a regular one since it requires a deeper focus. Eventually, it allows your mind to become completely silent and still.

It is believed that if you perfect your deep spiritual meditation, you’ll activate your intuition completely, you’ll be able to sense the energy connecting everything in the Universe, and you’ll give up your ego and experience the highest forms of love, kindness, and compassion.

This kind of experience is usually obtained by experienced yogis who dedicated their lives to spiritual practice.

It focuses on detaching from your surroundings and your body and turning your awareness inward. One helpful way might be using binaural beats or brown noise — focusing on every note and every space between the notes brings the needed immersive effect.

And of course, just like with any kind of meditation, when your mind starts wandering, you have to gently bring it back to your focus of choice (music, a candle flame, etc.) If you start beating yourself up for distraction, that’s going to bring you further and further from your intention.

I haven’t tried using binaural beats or a candle yet. At some point, I learned how to meditate spiritually, and I’ve been meditating for quite a while now and I’ve definitely seen huge results (especially, in how it affects my life and well-being). But I’d like to experience those deeper states on my own, without extra help, at least once. I like to think that if one day I find myself in the mountains with nothing around me miles and miles away, I would be able to pull it off. 🙂

💎 What is the perfect way to meditate?

You might wanna know how to meditate properly… But there is no perfect way to meditate!

Like I already said, one of the most important parts of any meditation is to let go of any expectations and go with the flow.

If you follow the instructions above and do it every day, even if it’s five minutes, you are doing great at meditation.

🛋 How to do spiritual meditation at home

Oh that is easier than you think. You will need… nothing.

Your home is actually one of the best places to meditate — it’s your safe space.

I suggest choosing your favorite room where you feel most like yourself. Choose a quiet time of the day, or ask your household members for several minutes of silence (I know, sometimes it’s not possible, then just choose the time when everyone is out or sleeping).

Use headphones if you listen to guided meditations, or play them on your laptop.

Get comfortable, and begin!

🔮 How to meditate spiritually with crystals

To meditate with crystals, you have to set a spiritual intention. For each different intention, you would choose a different crystal.

For example, if you want to work on letting go, you might want to choose obsidian. If you want to cultivate compassion, I’d recommend pink agate. If you are trying to balance your masculine and feminine energy, I’d try malachite. There are so many stones and so many intentions, that you’d have to look up your own.

By the way, I learned all this from my favorite crystal book: Crystal Basics by Nicholas Pearson.

Once you choose your crystal, hold it in your left hand while meditating. It will help you stay focused on your intention and will send you helpful vibrations.
