Trust the Universe and go with the flow, they say… Easier said than done, especially when things are clearly not going as planned! That’s how I used to think. Make yourself some coffee and let’s talk about how to trust the Universe when things go wrong.
It’s safe to say that nowadays a great number of people can identify themselves as control freaks. If you are one, welcome to the team. 👋🏼
And as much as it’s important to be on high alert in case some problems arise, it’s also crucial to know when to step back and say: “I’ve done all I could, now come what may”.
And it surely takes a tremendous amount of self-mastery not to get frustrated and angry if something is not working out.
And there is one thing to always remember: the Universe got your back.
So in this post, we’re talking about learning how to trust the Universe, about the messages it’s sending and what to do when everything goes wrong in life, the benefits of surrendering, and the exact steps to take to start trusting the Universe.
Practically, we are going to learn how to trust the Universe during hard times.
(By the way, you can call what I call the Universe whatever feels right to you — God, Source, and so on.)
This post is all about how to trust the Universe when things go wrong.
☝🏼 What is the Universe saying when everything goes wrong?
First of all, no panic! It never helped anyone.
And here’s a little secret.
Believe it or not, if everything goes wrong and it’s uncontrollable, you’re on the right path.
If you want to learn more about it, I have a whole post (that this series started with) about all things related to this topic:
What Is the Universe Saying When Everything Goes Wrong?
So how to trust the Universe when things go wrong? Let’s dive right into it.
😌 How to trust the Universe when things go wrong?
Now, this might sound weird, and I don’t want to sound negative but…
It all comes down to two options:
1. You either do your thing while enjoying the recognition that everything’s going to work out anyway (because you are being taken care of by the Universe);
2. Or you get anxious and worried about every tiny thing, pacing back and forth between different choices and decisions that life throws at you daily because you are just never sure what’s right and what’s wrong. And it feels like a lot of pressure.
When you feel like everything has to be under your control, and you’re hyper-focused on the result instead of fully living through your experiences, you build up resistance.
And when you hold on to resistance, everything gets much more challenging.
At the end of the day, you are living in this Universe. And if you don’t trust it… it might get pretty miserable.
So how to trust the Universe more? Let’s break it down.

🌌 Acknowledge that you are a part of it
…More than you think.
Did you know that we are made of stardust? You probably heard about it from the amazing Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
Here’s a quote from his beautiful book Astrophysics for People in a Hurry:
We are stardust brought to life, then empowered by the universe to figure itself out—and we have only just begun.
Long story short, most of the elements in our bodies were formed in the stars. I won’t be going far into the details, but here’s a comprehensible article that I enjoyed reading: Are We Really Made of Stardust?
Now, the way I think of this… is pretty uncommon. But I believe it sounds pretty convincing. Bear with me.
So, if something is a part of you, like your leg or your finger, would you really want to do something bad to it? I doubt that. You want to keep it healthy, strong, and functional.
Obviously, things won’t always be perfect and shiny. Shit happens. But you’ll do your best to take care of it, right?
I like to think that the Universe is working all the time to give you all the best it can because it WANTS you to do great.
By all means, A LOT depends on YOU.
But if you keep in mind that you have your little “safety cushion” it makes it more… bearable.
🙏🏾 Express gratitude
This is probably one of the most important points in this post.
I know that things are awful for you at the moment.
And it might seem like everything’s going wrong… but for this world and this life to exist, so much more has to go right.
While you are feeling miserable over everything in your life falling apart, the cells of your body are transcribing DNA into proteins hundreds of billions of times per second with virtually flawless loyalty. Your heart is most likely performing about 100,000 heartbeats a day with no breaks.
If you are reading this post, the above most likely can be applied. You also probably have your eyes OR ears, or both. You are also probably lucky enough to have access to the Internet, and also to clean water, food, and shelter.
These are already enough reasons to be grateful for your life and what you’ve got.
And don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to belittle your feelings or experiences. I am just trying to show you the reasons to be grateful for the things you are lucky to enjoy, rather than questioning your destiny and focusing on the negative that you have no control over.
On top of that, gratitude directly affects the manifestation process (dreams coming true).
The reason is the high vibrational frequency of gratitude. The same frequency can only be found in love, joy, and compassion.
The more often you experience the highest (unconditional) forms of these feelings, the more your body tunes into the same frequency. Therefore, the closer and closer it brings you toward the desired events.
Going back to our topic, as much as this unfortunate period is unpleasant and annoying, it’s also temporary.
And the easiest way to speed up its completion is to focus on what you already have and thank the Universe for that. It will also significantly boost your mood.
You’ll probably agree that getting angry and bitter, snapping at your loved ones, and getting discouraged over something that you have no control over, is pretty destructive and makes things worse.
There are plenty of ways to express gratitude. My favorites are meditation and journaling.
Here’s a meditation I recommend trying if you’d like to practice gratitude:

When it comes to journaling, I simply say thank you to the Universe on one or two pages for all the things I’m thankful for at the moment.
It can be anything from a pumpkin spice latte with coconut milk on the first chilly day of the fall, to having a peaceful sky over my head every day.

🌱 Practice patience
There are a lot of ways to practice patience, but I find three of them especially effective.
To begin with, you can do it through meditation.
With patience being the main objective, ANY kind of meditation can work (because one represents the other).
If you struggle with impatience or nervousness, include a five-minute meditation in your morning routine and you’ll see the difference pretty soon.
You can also cultivate patience by consciously controlling yourself.
Any time you catch yourself getting restless, rushing without any reason, running around and fussing, getting annoyed and frustrated while waiting for something that you are not able to speed up, actively stop yourself.
I usually tell myself loud in my head: STOP! Then I intentionally pause for a minute and slow down with whatever I am doing.
You can also use an imaginary STOP sign or a rubber band technique that I talk about in detail in this post: How to Stop Worrying About Others and Focus on Yourself
Finally, you can practice patience by guiding yourself into the right self-talk.
Try the following. Once you deliberately broke through the agitation cycle using one of the hacks above, ask yourself these questions:
1) If I’m getting annoyed, why?
Is something not meeting my expectations? Am I getting frustrated about something I can’t change?
2) If I’m rushing, why?
Am I being late or I’m just in an anxious state? (Did I have too much coffee? Not kidding.)
3) Can I impact this situation, or it’s something that I can’t control?
If it’s the first one, understand that you’ll be much more efficient in a calm state of mind and performing with a moderate pace, yet focused. If it’s the second one, tell yourself that there’s nothing you can change so might as well fully accept what’s happening the way it is.
No matter your answer, getting frustrated or anxious won’t benefit you.
🦋 Learn to let go and surrender (huge!!)
One of the most pivotal lessons to learn is how to let go and surrender.
Let go of everything that doesn’t serve you.
Let go of everything that doesn’t want to be in your life.
Let go of everything that you can’t control. (Any human being only has control over their mindset, their decisions and actions, and their response. That’s IT.)
Make it your everyday practice. Again, my favorite tool for that is meditation and journaling. Here’s my favorite meditation for that: 10-Minute Guided Meditation To Let Go
Spiritual reading and listening to podcasts or speeches from spiritual teachers help a lot to tap into that “free flow” state of mind as well.
At first, nothing is gonna change — you’ll see no difference. But then things will just start working out your way one after another, and that’s how you know that you are finally letting the Universe take care of you.
And yes, everyone always says “Let it go and be happy!” and blah-blah. At this point, you can call it cliche. And there’s a reason for it to be so popular: it really WORKS.
But there’s a necessary condition for it to work — you have to get there ON YOUR OWN.
It has to be your own intuition telling you to let go.
It has to be your internal urge to let it go because of how natural it feels.
It cannot be someone telling you what to do because in that case, you’d think you did it, but in reality, deep down in your heart, you’ll still be clinging to your old mindsets and patterns.
👍🏼 Benefits of surrendering to the Universe
There are PLENTY of benefits. I’ll name just some of them.
Here’s why you should trust the Universe:
- You have stronger inner confidence
- Good things come into your life effortlessly
- You are better connected with your deeper self (your focus is turned inward more often)
- You feel supported no matter what you’re going through
- It makes handling intense emotions more manageable
- You detach from unhelpful things and people painlessly
- It makes your life overall much easier by removing constant resistance
🎵 Trust the Universe — Mantra
If you’d like to try to work on your trust through chanting, try the OM mantra — it’s the most powerful one.
Here’s a beautiful ten-minute guided chanting meditation that you can try: Let go and Trust the Universe Meditation
Find a quiet place and a comfortable position (preferably seated with your back straight), and start playing the video. If you want a more immersive experience, use your headphones.
Now, while you are listening to the first few chants, close your eyes, and take three deep breaths. Then, start chanting.
By the way, if you are not able to chant — for example, if you are in a public place — you can just listen to the mantra, focusing on your breath. Listening to the mantra is as powerful as chanting if you stay focused on it. Its power is in the vibrations.
You can also try repeating affirmations in your mind or out loud.
